The Pyramids of Güímar
Last Sunday (13.08.06) our destination was the Pyramids of Güímar. Almost all of our new students joined the trip and so a group of 16 motivated, young people first took the bus to Santa Cruz and from there to Güímar. Thanks to it being well-signposted, it was easy to find this Tenerife attraction (even though some of us only managed to find the entrance at the second attempt).
For everybody who doesn´t know anything about the pyramids, here a short explanation:
Since 1991 the step pyramids of Güímar have been investigated by the famous Norwegian anthropologist Dr. Thor Heyerdahl, who considered them to be extremely similar to the ones in Peru, Mexico and Ancient Mesopotamia. Until then, the pyramids were considered to be useless stone cairns which were accidentally arranged that way by farmers clearing stones from their fields.
We wanted to get an idea of the whole issue and discover this secret.
The park itself offered more than you might think when you see it from the outside. We started our tour with a documentary film in the auditorium which explains the different theories and the similarities with pyramids found on other continents. Afterwards we enjoyed a walk through the park and took a look at the pyramids. We were accompanied by relaxing music, the sound of rushing water and the twitter of birds that were played from green bins along the way.
It was also possible to pay a visit to the museum, where once again the different theories are explained and the finds around the pyramids are exhibited.
After spending about 2 hours in the grounds, our group parted. Some of us hit the road home, the remainder headed towards the beach.
