In Tenerife February means - Carnival!

Abandon your job, get the fancy dress on and party, party, party.

Processions, music, dancing in the streets, the roadside stalls, chiringitos, sell deliciously tempting snacks and of course there’s plenty to drink - the favourite local beer is Dorada which is brewed on the island, or for one with an extra kick ask for the Dorada Especial; you will soon cast off your inhibitions and be dancing with the local population - the rhythm of the drums is infectious and it’s impossible not to move with it. It helps to wear a costume which can be bought in many shops at this time of your - let your hair down and discover a new liberated you!

Events are organise such as the Fancy Dress balls, parades, the traditional vintage car rally and the unusual race known as, "Mascarita ponte el tacón" which is run by men in masks wearing very high heels over cobbled streets.

On Ash Wednesday there is the strangely bizarre "entierro de la sardina" or Burial of the Sardine. This is a larger than life replica of a sardine which is pulled along on a float followed by the “weeping widows” who are in fact men dressed as widows wailing inconsolably as they follow the procession - like many of the parades it has to be seen to be believed! Once the procession reaches the end of its course the sardine is ritually burned.

Here is a selection of the activities in Puerto de la Cruz, this year the theme is “The Land of Volcanoes” - For the exact times ask at the Tourist Information office: Puerto Viejo, 13 38400 Puerto de la Cruz, Tel.: 922 388777 o 922 370243

Traditional seasonal RECIPE America Pancakes

Shrove Tuesday - the day before Ash Wednesday - In many English speaking this day is also called Pancake Day - The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of confession and doing penance.

Pancakes and doughnuts are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

This is a delicious recipe is traditionally served with Maple Syrup and crispy bacon in The Unites Sates but equally good with jam, lemon and sugar, liqueur - or whatever takes you fancy…

American Pancakes

Ingredients - cups Metric

half a cup of milk 100 ml
1 cup of flour 130 gr
2 large spoons of butter
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 large spoons sugar
pinch of salt

Put the milk, butter and egg in a bowl and mix together. Sift the flour baking powder and sugar in another bowl, make a well in the middle and pour in the liquid, whisk together with an electric mixer and let it stand for ten minutes it should be a thick mixture.

To cook - heat the frying pan - to test for the correct heat pour in a few drops of water, it should boil up immediately. Pour in a small amount of butter or oil and then with a ladle pour in mixture to make small pancakes. The top surface of the pancake will bubble, and then turn to cook on the other side.

Serve with butter and syrup - in America they like to stack them up with butter in between.

Enjoy!
